“I don’t *feel* ready”
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to someone’s goals, learned all the ways they want to change their lives… told them how I could help them… and they said:
“I just don’t think I’m ready for the gym or a personal trainer yet. But when I am ready… I’m coming to you!”
And I get it. “Lifestyle change” sounds like it’s going to be damn near impossible. The gym can be an intimidating place. Most of us have no clue what to do in the grocery store / kitchen and girl… “how Imma totally change my life when I never felt in control of it in the first place?!”
Plot twist… You don’t have to be “ready” for me. My job is to listen to the lifestyle you want, and break it down into manageable steps to get you there. Often times the reason we don’t feel ready for something new is because we’re focused on the end result way too early in the process. BACK IT UP! BACK IT UP! BACK IT UP! You need a wristband to get access to the end result baby! You tryna skip the line!
So let me meet you where you’re at. As a behavior change specialist, here are 3 tips to help you feel ready to enter the next phase of your life.
#1 Change your “non-food” diet.
Your non-food diet is all the things your brain takes in throughout the day: the posts you scroll by, the shows you watch, the music you listen to. All these things place little messages in our minds that influence how we think, feel and move. Let’s make those subconscious thoughts work for us! Mute or unfollow accounts on social media that don’t match the lifestyle you want and find new accounts that do. Find some podcasts for your morning routine or your ride to work so you can feed your mind encouragement. Find shows to watch where the main character is walking in some of the changes you hope to implement in your life.
#2 Place motivators around the house for yourself.
We know the classic options here: a vision board (I hear the pro’s are printing them through Canva now). However, there are other options including affirmations on color swatches from Home Depot (you can grab as many as you want for FREE.99!!) or changing your phone or laptop home screen. The point is to give yourself gentle, daily reminders that your new lifestyle is ready when you are.
#3 Start recruiting your support system.
It’s hard to feel ready to make such a major change when you feel like you’re making it on your own. Let’s round up the lil cheer squad! Let your biggest supporters know how bad you want this, and that you’re gearing up to make a lifestyle change. Their encouraging words and accountability check ins (“girl you started yet or what?”) will go a long way because it makes ME feel a little more like WE.
Now you know how to get ya mind right! It’s not going to be an easy journey, but you deserve more than the easy way out. You deserve to show up as the woman you keep daydreaming about. I’ll leave you with my favorite quote… “You can. You should. And if you’re brave enough to start… you will.”
